our projects and activities

Projects in Africa

So far, UMHA was involved in nine projects of our own in Africa, four of which are still running, while others are being monitored by our local partners.

In the field we (and our partners) are always searching for opportunities and possible projects to get involved in, to take the lead and support African communities with our training and equipment.

Furthermore, we have collaborated in many projects as an associated partner in countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Togo and the Gambia.

DRC 2011-2027

In 2011 we started in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by shipping equipment to communities in Kinshasa. We have been active on the ground with five UMHA projects, of which three are currently still running: Water and sanitation in Kinshasa (see video), the Simania School Project in Nsele and the Entrepreneurship for well-being in Mawawa Project, a project for the Mawawa community of 15 villages in NSele, supporting entrepreneurial activity in the region.

Ghana 2012-2026

Since 2012 we have been active in Ghana with several project coordinators, in amongst others Karimenga in the north east region, the greater Accra region and in Kumasi in the Ashanti region. These projects were mostly about empowering the agricultural community and setting up cooperatives for a stronger market position for farmers.

Our currently running project is about setting up a local artisanal factory producing agricultural finished products in Kumasi.

Our local contacts are setting up the facilities of the factory, for it to be up and running in 2026.

Cameroon 2015-2027

Since 2015 UMHA has had active relations in Cameroon, working on a project with the Rotterdam Business school and a Cameroonian native on a safe drinking water project combined with agricultural entrepreneurship.

In 2023 we joined the Erasmus+ funded project ‘Cameroon Renewed’ (ended december 2024).

With the Cameroon Renewed partners Noorderpoort College and local Cameroonian partners H4BF, FAP and SOPISDEW we are currently setting up new projects to cooperate on.

These projects are mostly about setting up sustainable entrepreneurial (regenerative agricultural)  activities in Magba, whilst protecting biodiversity and natural (wild-)life in the Noun Division region.

Activities in the Netherlands

Since 2007 UMHA has been active in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. We have organized and joined many informative and/or cultural events. In these events we try to combine the active participation of African born people in the north of the Netherlands with showing the rich culture of the African home regions to their Dutch neighbors. So at an event where for example job opportunities or digital illiteracy are addressed or discussed with Dutch partner organizations or local governments we will also show the African culture with food, music, dance and literature. Off course we will also always try to bring our activities in Sub Saharan Africa to the attention of the Dutch public. It is what we were founded for. Furthermore, from our office in Groningen we coordinate our activities in Africa and build a strong network of partners and stakeholders in Europe: we arrange for a meetup with the Dutch embassy in Kinshasa when we are in DRC, we sign an agreement with the Congolese Ministery to be able to work in DRC and we present our book ‘Revolutions in the Third World’ to the Minister of Development Aid in the Netherlands.
